Engineering training and research

SIGMA Clermont promotes a strong link between engineering training and research.
Faculty members, who carry out their research activities in these laboratories, enable student engineers to benefit from the latest advances in their fields.

Master’s degree

SIGMA Clermont engineering students have the opportunity to follow a Master's programme in parallel with their final year of engineering studies:

Doctorate

The different types of doctorate

  • Single doctorate – The thesis is registered and defended at a single institution, and is carried out under the supervision of a single research supervisor.

  • Co-supervised doctorate – There are two thesis supervisors: one in the main laboratory, in the candidate's home institution, and another, usually in another institution, in France or abroad. This is an interesting way of completing a doctorate as part of an international collaboration.
  • Co-awarded doctorate – This is a co-supervised doctorate that allows the candidate to receive a degree from each of the home universities of the 2 thesis supervisors (and sometimes a single joint degree, with the names of the 2 institutions). Students register with the 2 institutions under an agreement.

  • Doctorate in a company (CIFRE) – The CIFRE scheme (Convention industrielle de formation par la recherche - Industrial agreement for training through research) allows students to do their doctorate in a company, in association with the school. In this case, the doctoral student has both a thesis director, a university professor, and a supervisor in the company. They are employed by the company, which in turn receives a government grant, and at the end of their thesis they graduate from the establishment.

  • Doctorate by VAE – A thesis by Validation of Acquired Experience consists of having skills comparable to those resulting from the traditional doctorate validated, but obtained in the context of a professional activity of at least 3 years since the highest diploma was obtained.

The doctoral schools coordinate doctoral training within higher education and research establishments. Nearly 90 doctoral students work in the school's laboratories under the supervision of SIGMA Clermont's lecturers and researchers.
